In the recent years, the Breeders' Cup races which are held at the end of each year, have been seen as a challenge to the Triple Crown events, which is held earlier in the year. The Triple Crown events determine the champion of three-year-old while the Breeders' Cup is held at another track each year. The latest edition as of 2006 was last held at Churchill Downs. In Canada the most famous horse in considered being the Northern Dancer in general. After winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, Northern Dancer became the most successful Thoroughbred of the twentieth century. The next challenger and the only challenger to Northern Dancers' title as the greatest Canadian horse would be his own son, Nijinsky II, being the last horse to win the Triple Crown in England or the English Triple Crown. He was also considered to be the better horse for races.

This is Canada's premier thoroughbred stakes game or race and The North America Cup is known as Canada's most premier standard bred stakes for races. It is the race track in North America alone which stages both Standard bred (harness) and Thoroughbred meetings for the same day. The largest purse of the Canadian horse race is the Pattison Canadian International.

Horse racing in Australia has also enjoyed some great success with some of their races like the famous Melbourne Cup, which is the so-called race that could stop the nation. It has attracted many entries from other countries recently. The most famous horse in Australia was Phar Lap. Phar Lap raced from 1928 until 1932.
Phar Lap was originally a New Zealand bred. The years 2003-2005 saw Makybe Diva becoming the first and the lone horse to ever triumph at the Melbourne Cup for three times. In the field of harness racing, the known horse is Paleface Adios who became a famous household name during the 70s.Cardigan Bay who was from New Zealand and was a pacing horse also enjoyed tremendous success in the sixties at the American harness races' highest levels.
